WTF! Was It All A Dream?
Is anybody else still dogshit poor after the Cost Of Living Crisis, the Energy Fuel Crisis, Covid, Lockdown, Brexit, brutal benefit ‘reforms’, and the Premiership Football financial-dealing investigations?
Or is Facebook just winding me up about peoples’ purchases, new homes, expensive hobbies, sparkling outfits, posh meals, foreign holidays, nights & days out, festival tickets, gigs, parties, and coronation celebrations?
It was only a few months ago wasn’t it?
When we were all poor?
When everyone’s business was failing, no-one could get work, bills were going unpaid, houses were remortgaged or sold, everyone was using foodbanks, people were dying, children were unfed, and the economy was never going to recover from the multiple Winters of Discontent.
I can see that people are angry.
I can see that people are striking, and/or protesting.
But I can’t see that there’s much sympathy. Not in the world of narcissistic endeavour.
Not in the world of funny memes.
Not in the world of TikTok videos, influencers, business-owners, hospitality, commodified sport, realpolitik, or inflated pensions.
Maybe I’ve just got wealthy Facebook friends?
Ones who ‘thought’ they were struggling, but who in fact get a wee bit pissy when a toy falls from their Cosatto prams?
The world in my ‘must-have’ digital space is so unfamiliar to me. Mammon is back in town.
It’s like shit got real for a brief moment, then everyone went back to being just beyond ‘comfortable’.
My perceived world is still full of war, famine, disease, poverty, repossessions, debt-collection, fly-tipping, doctors waiting-lists, cancelled operations, threatening letters, really worried people whose benefit has been rescinded, and that ever-present threat of Christmas and Putin.
We clapped, yeah.
And we stayed home, we donated to foodbanks, we posted on Twitter, we volunteered to help out, we saved lives, and we all installed smartmeters, whilst flying flags for Ukraine and decrying solar panel farms.
And that was enough right?
Job done.
Everything’s back to ‘normal’.
House prices are back in their own ivory towers, domestic flights are back in vogue, holidays abroad are de rigeur, vanity, self-indulgence, entitlement, and pernicious capitalism dressed-up as ‘a living’, are zeitgeisty again.
The Revolution has been digitalised.
Everyone has been marked safe.
<Winky Emoticon>.
It was all a bit Bobby Ewing wasn’t it?
Just a bad dream.
Nothing to see here.
Keep calm & carry on as before………….
